The Gallaher family eventually spread across New Zealand and Australia, encouraged by the opportunities of the gold fields of both countries. Contact gradually was lost as the generations passed and soldiers died in the First Great War. Kay Carter’s research over the last nine years brought many relations together for brief gatherings and the collection of stories and photographs. Now the book is ready and we hope it will become a treasured record in each descendant family.


David Gallaher, the 1905 All Black captain, is renowned for the leaderhsip qualities he displayed on the sportsfield and in battle. His team of Rugby footballers that toured the United Kingdom and Ireland became a legend.

Already a veteran of the Boer War in South Africa, he volunteered to serve in the First Great War and, as the regimental sergeant-major, in leading his men from the trenches in a desperate attack at Passchendaele he was hit by shrapnel and died of his wounds.

He was a man’s man, who lived to a code of duty and comradeship.
